The Västergötland Museum
Located in the heart of Skara is the Västergötland Museum. Here you can explore over 10,000 years of the region’s fascinating history. The permanent exhibitions tell the story of medieval Skara, the well-preserved Bronze Age shields, and the transformative history of how the mighty ice sheet has shaped human life. In one of the museum’s exhibitions, you’ll also meet Kata, the woman who ruled the manor in Varnhem in the 11th century. Every year, the museum hosts interesting temporary exhibitions, lectures, and concerts.
Adjacent to the museum lies the idyllic open-air museum Fornbyn, with its lovely walking area. Here you’ll find buildings from various parts of Västergötland that have been moved here to showcase our history and what life was like in the old farming community. There are lovely green spaces perfect for a picnic—why not bring along something tasty and enjoy it outdoors?
